August 1883 - † August 1943
Born in 1883 in Bagneres-de-Bigorre. Pierre Latecoère studied in the "Ecole Centrale" of Paris.
Airplane and armament manufacturer during the First World War, Pierre Latecoère decided to create his own company once the conflict was over.
The first flights took place in 1918 between Toulouse and Barcelona to reach Morocco then Senegal in 1924.
It's in 1927 that the company was renamed the "Aeropostale".
It's on board a Late 28 that Jean Mermoz crossed the South Atlantic Ocean for the first time on May 12, 1930, landing in Natal with his mail payload, after a 21 hours flight.
In 1932, the company was sold to "Air France", but Latecoère went on building aeroplanes until in the Second World War for the benefit of the "Vichy" government.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the Latecoère company still exists and provides elements for Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Dassault and Embraer on the Méaulte and Saint-Nazaire sites.
"I did the calculations many times... Our idea is not feasible. We only have one thing to do now: realise it!" (1956, Didier Daurat, "Dans le vent des hélices", Le Seuil editions)
